The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that serves all farmers, ranchers and agricultural partners through the delivery of effective, efficient agricultural programs for all Americans. The agency provides America’s farmers with a strong safety net through farm commodity and disaster programs. FSA continues to assist farmers and landowners through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). FSA also provides loans to agricultural eligible producers who are unable to receive private, commercial credit. Farmers’ Legal Action Group (FLAG) provides legal services and support to family farmers and their communities in order to help keep family farmers on the land. Farmers can contact FLAG with questions about their farm operation ranging from farm leases, business contracts, farm loans, government programs and more through our Farmer Hotline, via email or through our website contact form. Our attorneys create guides to programs that affect farmers’ lives, including seven guides to COVID-19 relief programs within the last year. These clear guides provide concrete, accurate legal information to help farmers face the tough decisions they have to make and help them to achieve success. FLAG also hosts webinars to help farmers understand and navigate these programs. Translated from Ojibwe, Bimaaji’idiwin can be understood as “saving each other’s lives,” or “symbiosis,” reflecting the reciprocal relationship between Anishinaabeand cultivated plants. This is a heavy name to live up to and the Ojibwe Garden Program attempts to do so through education, outreach, and preservation. The Food Group is a local nonprofit focused on using nutritious food to strengthen community. We work at the intersection of food access, equity, and nutrition issues related to food and hunger in 32 counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin. We break down barriers to growing good food locally and getting good food to those who need it most. One of our core programs, Big River Farms, offers education in organic agriculture for farmers who have historically been underrepresented in farm ownership—including BIPOC, women, and New American farmers. We provide beginning farmers in the program mentorship and guidance in managing their own 1/8 to 6-acre plots of certified organic land at Big River Farms, our 150-acre incubator farm near Marine on St. Croix, MN. Over the last 10 years, LEDC has developed multiple ways to help Latino farmers in Minnesota both start and grow their farm businesses. We provide technical assistance, business development, access to capital and markets, as well as specialize in Organic and GAP certification for your farm.
